Marbiol History

Welcome to my Professional Practice

In the context of the Covid-19 situation, I had to do my Professional Practice remotely. The topic evolved and became the realization of a documentary on the History of the Marine Biology Research Group of Gent University. I did this project on my own, from interviews to video editing. I also realized a Trailer and a live session on YouTube to present the documentary.

At the same time, Kat Griswold and I were in charge of the Instagram account of the Marine Biology Research Group. The purpose was to share our work every week as well as some scientific researches that we found interesting.

With this website, you are now able to see all my work and feel free to ask me questions and/or comments at the end of your reading.

Marbiol History: The Trailer

In order to do some teasing on Instagram for the documentary, I decided to create a short trailer, which I hope will raise your curiosity.

Marbiol History: The full documentary

This documentary was the biggest work of this Professional Practice. I started by contacting researchers, technicians, and staff members to plan some interviews. The meetings lasted for 5 weeks approximately. In the meantime, I started to group the information I had and compile my data. I wrote a script, then it was easier to do my video editing on iMovie. Lastly, I had to learn how to do a live session on YouTube with the software OBS.

Probabilities, what will happen during the following years?

During my interviews, I asked questions about different topics, from people's first memory to what they think will happen during the following years in the lab? With this graph, I am presenting one of the results of my questions. Sixteen persons were asked about this and the majority of them answered that a split in smaller labs may happen.

What about the Instagram account?

About me

I'm Alexia, a first-year Master student of the IMBRSea Master program. Concerning my background, I did a bachelor in Biology, a first year of Master in Reproductive Biology, and a Civic Service in Urban Agriculture. I always have been passionate about life and nature, and when I discovered by chance, the Master Program IMBRSea, I applied for it naturally.

Since then, I did my first semester in Brest, France, and my second semester in Faro, Portugal. During this time, I discovered the world of fisheries and especially small-scale fisheries and this topic became a passion. I was also, supposed to go to Gent to do this Professional Practice in Scientific Communication.

My thoughts about career evolved, and for now, I can see myself working in the world of Fisheries and particularly in communication and/or management. I really think there is a lack of information on Fisheries and Small-Scale Fisheries for the non-scientists public.

Making-off of my presentation video

One funny last note. In the first week of this Professional Practice, I did a presentation video that was posted on Instagram. The purpose was to introduce myself and what I will do during this PP. A friend helped me filming me and we did multiple catches. I founded some parts funny and so, I decided to create a making-off of this presentation video. I hope this will give you a smile, or maybe a laugh.

Feel free to write any comments you have, what you thought of this PP or this website, and/or what you would have done differently.
